Platform Switching
While few articles claimed that platform switching might be only a commercially driven myth, several systematic reviews agreed to state that this prosthetic concept may represent an effective strategy to minimize peri-implant bone resorption minimizing its etiologic factors.
However the most part of these reviews declared that results should be interpreted with caution due to the presence of uncontrolled confounding factors in the included studies. To better understand this controversial aspect, going deeper in the knowledge of biology behind this prosthetic concept is strictly required. In fact, it was demonstrated that compared to a traditionally restored implant, the platform switching configuration may have the connective tissue compartment seated over the implant platform and in direct contact with prosthetic components. This could suggest new strategies to exploit the clinical potentialities of platform switching.
